Jacob - A Judith Felsen Poem

Jacob*

When I forgive you Esau,

will I become much closer to the ram?

Might loving you be my disintegration

surrender being sacrifice,

atonement yielding only smoke?

Reunion’s renaissance of ancient memories,

rivalries, hatreds of the past,

makes our fraternity a hostile home…

Our angels scout in superficial safety,

bringing, giving, messages, espionage divine,

as strategies forged only to defend are born.

The hope that lasts is not with us

but from Above,

a knowing, trust in You as our Commander…

our battles fought on earth

as worldly copies of Your skirmishes,

heavenly fist a cuffs, bouts, in which everyone wins…

as illusory boundaries

are brought to and released in light…

Reunion means I now see you in me…

forgiveness means

I now see only You

in us…
